Healthy weight loss diets are the kind of diet that do not harm the body and provide a sustainable weight loss. A healthy weight loss diet is only achievable if all aspects that causes obesity are addressed. In addition to this, healthy diets do not just forbid certain foods but also provides alternatives and what should be eaten. By forbidding certain food without providing an alternative, a weight loss program becomes unsustainable. This is because people often develops a taste for certain types of food, so if the taste buds have gotten accustomed to a diet high in saturated fat, then it is highly likely that a person embarking on a weight loss program will only substitute one fatty food for another, often without even realising it.

Example of healthy weight loss diets are shown below where fattening foods are substituted for more healthy ones.

  • Eat wholemeal crackers and Veg Sticks instead of cream crackers, biscuits and crisps. This is because cream crackers, biscuits and crisps are all usually high in saturated fats and salt. But wholemeal crackers and Veg Sticks are relatively low in fat, in addition to which they also have a low in glycemic Index (GI), making a person less likely to feel hungry soon after eating them. Also wholemeal crackers and Veg Sticks are high in fibre, helping a healthy bowel movement.
  • Low fat frozen yoghurt or frozen skimmed milk should be substituted for ice cream.
  • Low fat cottage cheese or low fat cheese should be substituted for other cheese, as normal cheese is exceptionally high in fat.
  • If it is absolutely necessary to have a treat, then dark chocolate should be substituted for milk or white chocolate, as dark chocolate tends to contain less fat and sugar.
  • Substitute steamed potato for fried potato (such as chips or French fries). Potato cooked in oil tends to be exceptionally high in fat.
  • Instead of frying food in a pan use the grills. Ideally all meat should be either grilled or steamed to ensure the saturated fat is extracted as much as possible.
  • Substitute wholemeal bread, rice and pasta for white variety. This is because wholemeal foods tend to be lower in glycemic Index, making it less likely for a person to feel hungry soon after. In addition to this, they are also high in fibre, which assists the healthy functioning of the bowels.
