weight loss and metabolic rate

weight loss
The metabolic rate determines how much energy a body requires to function. When people refer to metabolic rate they are actually talking about the Basal Metabolic Rate. The Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is defined as the amount of energy expended by a person when at rest. Therefore, measuring the Basal Metabolic Rate is very important to any healthy weight loss program.

Basal Metabolic Rate and weight loss

One of the goals of a healthy weight loss program is to increase the Basal Metabolic Rate so that the body requires more energy to function. In order to do this it is therefore important to understand the parameters that directly influence the BMR. These are Age, Genetics, Lean Muscle Mass, Diet and lifestyle. Although it is not possible to influence the Age or the genetics parameters, a lot can be done to change the lean muscle mass and the weight loss lifestyle.

The more lean muscle mass the body has, the more energy it requires to sustain it. This energy increases the BMR, making it easier to loose weight. Lifestyle also greatly influences the BMR. A weight loss lifestyle will be designed specifically to encompass a weight loss exercise program in conjunction with a weight loss diet and other daily habitual weight loss lifestyle. All of which serve to increase the BMR.

Unhealthy weight loss diets can lower the metabolic rate

Unhealthy weight loss diets often fail because even though they help people to loose weight in short periods of time, they actually result in lowering of the metabolic rate. This in turn lowers the ability to burn body fat and therefore as soon as the person starts a normal healthy diet, they will begin to store fat. Diets that are based on food deprivation will inevitably lower the BMR. Conversely, eating little and often will increase the BMR, which helps the body to burn more fat. It is always recommended that healthy weight loss diets should always be followed.

How to calculate the Basal Metabolic Rate

The following equation is used to calculate the Basal Metabolic Rate:

BMR for men (kcal/day)= 13.7516m+5.0033h-6.7550a+66.4730

BMR for women (kcal/day)= 9.5634m+1.8496h-4.6756a+665.0955

Where:

m = weight (kg)

h = height (centimetres)

a = age (years)

The secret to weight loss is about controlling the amount of kilogram calories taken in through food (please note that when people talk about calories, they are in fact referring to the Kilogram Calories). The human body requires certain amount of energy to function normally and any additional physical exertions require additional energy.
