Benefits of water for weight loss

weight loss
Water makes up about 60% of the male, and 55% of the female, adult human body. This makes water the most essential nutrient to human survival, as well as, to a weight loss program. Dehydration directly effects weigh loss, this is because when a body is dehydrated then the body tries to get water it needs from food, by triggering feeling of being hungry. In addition to which, dehydration also effects the normal functioning of the organs such as kidneys and liver, affecting the bodies ability to metabolise fat.

How water helps weight loss

There is a direct correlation between water and weight loss as the body's functionality depends on correct hydration. There are a number of ways in which correct hydration can assist weight loss. Firstly, dehydration affects the functionality of the kidneys whose operation is directly dependent on proper hydration. Kidneys function is part of the Urinary System whose primary function is to filter the impurities from the blood. However, the kidneys are not the only organs responsible for the blood purification. The liver also is tasked with removing toxins from the blood, which means that should the kidneys fail to function properly then this results in the liver having to take up the additional load of purification. The livers function however is also to metabolise fat, which, relatively speaking, is classed as a secondary function compared with blood purification, meaning that the body considers blood purification as more important function than fat metabolism. Therefore, should the kidneys fail to function properly due to dehydration, then additional load is put on the liver, hindering its ability to metabolise fat efficiently.

Secondly, water is so important to our survival that the body is designed to also extract water from the consumed food. However, this is not necessarily a good thing if the aim is weight loss. This is because when the body's receptors signalling dehydration are ignored, as people often do, then the body resorts to utilising the hunger receptors as a way of hydrating the body by using the water contained in food. It is for this reason that anyone wishing to loose weight must not ignore the importance of keeping the body hydrated, and must drink a glass of water ten minutes prior to eating as quite often the feeling of hunger is actually caused by dehydration.

How much water for weight loss?

In order to prevent dehydration, an average male requires about eight glasses of water a day, distributed through out the day. If the body is hydrated regularly and often then the majority of the water taken in is absorbed, rather than secreted through the urinary system.
